in building the Hoover Dam. Though
the company's beginning was modest with a single cement plant in
Colton, Calif., the investors' vision
was not.
The pioneers of producing Portland
Cement in Southern California were a
long way from Pennsylvania's Lehigh

Valley, then the heart of the country's cement industry, according The
CalPortland Story, the company's 125year anniversary publication.
CalPortland was intent upon introducing portland cement to the U.S.
marketplace, and just like the concrete used to make the Hoover Dam,

the company continued to strengthen
with age.
A History of Growth
Sixteen years after California
Portland Cement Company formed to
supply cement to the growing cities
of Southern California, Pioneer Sand
and Gravel incorporated and focused
on providing concrete products to the
Pacific Northwest.
Both companies grew through
expansion and acquisitions over
the years, bringing in small companies with similar products and
culture, as Pioneer became Lone
Star Northwest and then Glacier
Northwest. According to the company, the California Portland Cement
Company and Glacier shared a common patriarch company in Taiheiyo
(formerly Onoda) and were both an
important part of the building industry. Beyond that, they had little in
common. While the merger of compatible families made sense on paper, it
had been tried previously without
long term success.
California Portland Cement Company
and Glacier Northwest finally merged
in 2005, now operating as CalPortland
with headquarters in Glendora, Calif.
The company motto is "Expect more...
We deliver."
Allen Hamblen, CalPortland president, and Ron Summers, senior vice
president of materials, both believe
CalPortland, with the resources of
the combined companies, is better
situated to meet the demands of the
21st century.
"We are trying very hard to
grow, to move to new markets,"
Summers said.
The company is a wholly owned
subsidiary of the Japanese company
Taiheiyo, itself over a century old.
Taiheiyo, according to Hamblen,
has a long-standing tradition of
looking for ways to make a better
product while working to protect
the environment.
CalPortland's growth over the last
125 years has been tied to the economy and determined by expansion. A

beginning of the Colton Mill in 1894
