Quarry (Vulcan Materials Company)
of Franklin, Tenn.; Hillsboro Quarry
(Rogers Group Inc.) of Hillsboro,
Tenn.; and Shelly Materials East
Fultonham (The Shelly Company, an
Oldcastle Materials Inc., company.)
of East Fultonham, Ohio, were named
Excellence in Community Relations
Gold Award recipients.
The NSSGA created its Excellence
in Community Relations Program in
1989 to recognize aggregate producers who, through their community
relations efforts, have made significant enhancements in how the
public viewed the aggregate industry, particularly the individual producer's operation. The NSSGA selects
a panel of independent judges who
assess facilities' community relations work and present Gold Awards
to the top 10 percent. The Platinum
Award is given to the best of the Gold
Award winners.
"On behalf of everyone at the Acton
Quarry, Dufferin Aggregates and CRH
Canada Group Inc., we are incredibly
honored to receive NSSGA's Platinum
Award for Community Relations,"
said Ed Persico, general manager
of Dufferin Aggregates, a division
of CRH Canada Group Inc., which
is a division of Oldcastle Materials.
"We place the utmost importance
on regular interactions with various
community stakeholders in Halton
Hills and the surrounding areas.
This award speaks to the success of
our Corporate Social Responsibility
Community Engagement Plan, the
Acton Quarry Community Liaison
Committee and everyone with
Dufferin Aggregates Acton Quarry
who has worked so hard to develop
the plan and put it into action. This
is a true credit to them."
"NSSGA would like to congratulate
Acton Quarry for its exemplary community relations efforts. It has truly
set the platinum standard for what
it means to be a good community
partner," said NSSGA President and

CEO Michael W. Johnson. "All of our
Excellence in Community Relations
Gold Award winners should be incredibly proud of their efforts, as well.
Because they have all enriched their
communities in wonderful ways, it
was difficult to pick one that stood
above the rest."
Aggregate producers and the environment are inextricably linked.
Construction aggregates are the most
quarried materials in the world, and
Acton Quarry chose to center one
of its major community initiatives
around Earth Week celebrations.
The most recent iteration of this
event took place on April 30, 2016,
when Dufferin Aggregates volunteers
teamed up with employees, families
of employees and Scouts Canada to

form a group more than 350 strong
that banded together to plant trees
at the Acton Quarry. This year's 16th
annual tree-planting event saw more
than 3,200 trees planted at the site.
"Scouts Canada has stated their
vision is of 'Canadian youth making a
meaningful contribution to creating
a better world,'" Persico said. "The
Dufferin Aggregates Acton Quarry is
privileged to host our annual treeplanting event as a vehicle that helps
Scouts Canada achieve that vision."
While Dufferin Aggregates Acton
Quarry ascended to the top of the
class in terms of community relations, each of the Excellence in
Community Relations Gold Award
winners made important and significant contributions in their respective
