management, are really set by you. So
keep pushing them."
When it comes to trusting people,
Morrish said it's an essential quality
in life and business; a two-way street.
"Sure, you may get burned once or twice,
but the benefits of trusting people outweigh the risks, in my experience," he
said. "Let's also remember that you
might be the most brilliant strategist or

the smartest person in your business, but
it doesn't matter if no one trusts you."
Importance of
Industry Advocacy
Hosting the Young Leaders event in
Texas, the fastest-growing state in the
country, offered some valuable lessons
in the importance of advocacy. About
20 million people are expected to move

SAND & GRAVEL REVIEW, July/August 2016

to the Lone Star state in the next 20
years, and yet state regulations limit
the production of concrete.
"Imagine trying to produce at that
demand rate, but your ability to do
that becomes much more constricted.
Imagine how important the politics now
become, how important your relationships with environmental regulators
become," said Rich Szecsy, president
of the Texas Aggregates and Concrete
Association. He said that being an
advocate also means getting involved
with neighbors and community leaders who have great say in how quarries and plants are perceived by their
elected officials.
At the time he spoke to the Young
Leaders, he knew of 4,000 social media
users involved in Facebook and online
groups who exist to oppose aggregates
operations. In one town, there are more
people in an anti-industry group than
voted in that area's last election. "What
does that tell you about the power of
social media and working with these
neighbors? All politics are local, and
these relationships are important ones
to cultivate," he said. This is the time
to make investments in getting to know
regulators, neighbors and lawmakers,
said Szecsy.
Ryan Lindsey, vice president of government relations of the Texas region
for Oldcastle Materials, Inc., echoed
that statement and issued a challenge
to attendees.
"Public money drives our business
and we must interact with elected officials; they are the ones who control the
purse strings. We need real relationships with these people," Lindsey said.
"Do you have his or her cell number? If
you call, will they answer the phone? If
not, then you really don't have a relationship with that elected official and
you need to build that up.
"Young leaders, it is your turn to
get involved. Are you going to become
advocates for this industry, or will you
just be along for the ride? Put a face on
your business and on our industry. We
need those personal connections to fix
the highway trust fund," he said. ■
