MATERIALS HANDLING
IN 2015, 37 PERCENT of all injuries in stone, sand
and gravel operations were associated with
materials handling.
Could these types of accidents
happen at your facility?
* An employee sprained his back lifting and
throwing a 140-pound log washer part.
* A worker got material in his eye when shoveling gravel from underneath equipment.
Following best practices can prevent
strains, sprains, fractures, hernias and amputations when
handling materials and equipment.
Workers should be trained on proper body mechanics, posture,
work positioning, safe lifting and manual material handling.
To help prevent back injuries, use ergonomic equipment, lift and handle weights between your knees
and shoulders and reduce the size and weight of objects.
Seek help from coworkers or use handles or guards when handling heavy, bulky or awkward loads.
Keep the workplace free of water, oil, accumulations of material and debris, holes and other slip and
trip hazards.
Display the load capacity on rated lifting equipment for worker safety. Always wear seatbelts when
operating or riding in mobile equipment. Set crane outriggers on stable bases and on ground that will
support the machine and do not overreach or lift outsized loads.
Wear appropriate protective equipment (PPE) to protect against workplace-specific hazards.
* Head: Where overhead hazards exist, wear a hard hat that is in good condition and fits properly on
your head.
* Eyes: Wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles and use face shields when grinding, burning,
welding or working with molten metal.
* Hands: Use gloves that are appropriate to the work being done and the materials being handled. Be
sure they are sized properly, clean and in good condition.
* Feet: Wear steel-toed shoes or boots when handling heavy objects. Metatarsal guards may be needed
in your workplace. Rubber shoes may be needed in wet conditions or synthetic materials around
chemicals. Shoes with defined heels may be needed when climbing ladders to prevent feet from slipping through rungs.
Keep the workplace free of water, oil, accumulations of material and debris, holes and other slip and
trip hazards
Mechanical lifting also poses hazards. Miners operating mechanical equipment need to know the
limits of the machine. Display the load capacity on rated lifting equipment. Always wear seatbelts when
operating or riding in mobile equipment. Set crane outriggers on stable bases and on ground that will
support the machine and do not overreach or lift outsized loads.
