A Place for the Community
The presence of an aggregates
operation within a community is
important to its overall economic
strength. However, FEC Quarry, a
CEMEX facility located Miami, Fla.,
demonstrates that a quarry can offer
a community so much more. The team
at FEC defines what it means to be
a positive fixture in the community
through its "open door" policy for
hosting members of the community
and its on-site educational programs.
The team's community outreach programs are an extension of CEMEX's
core values and the belief effective
community relations are one of the
keys to success as an aggregates
operation. "We believe in the power
of a unified community," said Jenna
R. Emerson, legislative and public
affairs manager for CEMEX's Florida
Region. "A rock-solid premise to our
business plan is to be a leader in our
industry by being a responsible corporate citizen and worthwhile business partner to our communities."
For FEC Quarry, building relationships with the community often
means bringing residents and stakeholders into the facility to experience it for themselves. As the most
toured quarry in CEMEX's Florida
Region, the team recently built a
viewing platform to better accommodate visitors and to provide them
with a great vantage point of the
5,519-acre facility. Frequent visitors
include local and state representatives, who attend groundbreakings
and open houses at the facility.
The Quarry as Classroom
Connecting with local students
and providing hands-on learning
opportunities is also a big priority
for the team at FEC Quarry, Emerson
said. In 2006, the operation began
an extensive partnership with the
