Washington, D.C., and build a climate for joint advocacy.
* Advocacy is Job No. 1 for the association, but NSSGA cannot do this
alone. In the coming years, NSSGA
will look to bring together advocates from related industries to
make the aggregates voice louder
and stronger on Capitol Hill.
* NSSGA will look to strategically
build membership in key regions
of the country to improve advocacy
with critical members of Congress
* The association will provide tools
and resources for member companies to become better advocates
and make their operations more
efficient, safe and to make the permitting process easier.
Individuals and Quarries
Recognized for Outstanding
Commitment to Industry
The Platinum Award of Excellence
in Community Relations is the highest industry recognition for community outreach and is given to a single
quarry that has gone above and beyond
to show the positive impact a quarry
can make. This year's award recognized
Gallatin Quarry, a Rogers Group, Inc.,
operation in Gallatin, Tenn.
A strong and active community relations program is the best way for an
aggregate producer to demonstrate
clearly that an operation is an asset in
any community. "We can never place
too high a standard on maintaining and

promoting good community relations
in the aggregates industry," said Bob
Weldon of Weldon Materials, Inc., when
he presented the Platinum Award during NSSGA's Opening General Session.
Gallatin Quarry's efforts to show
goodwill to their neighbors spread
across every possible corner of Sumner
County in Tennessee. They are literally involved with every aspect of their
community. Gallatin quarry employees
are engaged with schools throughout
their region, from elementary school
programs to the high school track team.
Two National Stars of Excellence
awards were presented to Lehigh
Hanson quarries in Texas-Bridgeport
Quarry, in Chico, and Servtex Quarry, in
New Braunfels. The Stars of Excellence
awards are given to quarries that
receive Gold Awards in at least two of
the Safety Excellence, Environmental
Excellence and or Community Relations
Excellence categories within five years.
Southington Sand and Pit Tilcon
Connecticut, Inc., Abilene Blacklease
Quarry and Dalton Quarry received
Safety Excellence awards for demonstrating exemplary safety performance. Iddings Quarry, Inc., Wiregrass
Construction Company, Inc., and
Specialty Granules Inc., received
Sterling Safety awards. The Sterling
Safety Award was created in 1994 to
recognize the companies that have the
lowest total accident incidence rate for
the previous year (2016) in their category among NSSGA members according
to MSHA-provided data.

the MLPA developed a stable budget and
reserves and their scholarship program
awards $18,000 annually to students
of member companies. He also created a successful PAC and worked with
many state legislators to pass laws that
improved member operations.
For more than 29 years, White led
and managed associations, including the Iowa Lumber association,
Northwestern Lumber Association and
the ILPA. Throughout his career, White
worked diligently with ILPA members to
establish and maintain a very positive
working relationship with Iowa's transportation and regulatory community.
He also designed and administered the
MSHA Enforcement Alerts website.

and return home healthy.
Doug Palmore Receives
Industry's Highest Achievement

Commitment Award was presented to
Doug Palmore, senior vice president
of customer and technical services at
Luck Companies.
