Inside This Year's
AGG1 Academy & Expo
The 2018 AGG1 Academy & Expo and
World of Asphalt Show & Conference
hosted a sold-out show floor that
broke size records and spanned a
combined 174,000 net square feet
of exhibits. Attendees and exhibitors enjoyed a very positive atmosphere as they conducted business
and discussed issues affecting future
growth, such as infrastructure funding. Industry experts shared best
practices during well-attended education sessions. The co-located exhibitions were held at the George R.
Brown Convention Center in Houston
Registered attendance topped a
near record of over 8,300 at the close
of the shows, with attendees coming
from all 50 states, all 10 Canadian
provinces and 50 other countries
worldwide. More than 460 exhibitors,
including more than 160 new to the
shows, displayed their latest products
and technologies for the aggregates,
asphalt, pavement maintenance and
traffic safety sectors.

During the Conveyors 101 session on March 6, attendees took away an
understanding of how important conveyors are to an aggregate plant's
productivity. Jeff Jurasits, ASGCO Complete Conveyor Solutions, and
James Wrigley, LafargeHolcim, touched on conveyor safety, storage,
conveyor belt fundamentals, conveyor belt maintenance and repair. "If
conveyors aren't running, you're not making a profit," said Jurasits.
"That's how important they are to our business. No matter what facilities you work in, conveyors provide an effective and efficient means
of moving product from one place to another."
Belt safety was a major focus of this year's presentation. "MSHA
rules are there for your safety, not to be a pain," said Jurasits. Wrigley
followed up by saying, "The bottom line is that if it's not locked out,
tagged out and tried out, it's not safe. Anywhere, anytime, anyplace
there are moving parts, appropriate guarding and safeguards need to
be in place."
"These outstanding numbers
emphasize the value of the convention and AGG1. This really is the best
time for anyone in our industry to
connect with peers, examine business
issues that affect our operations and
get energized for the future," said
Joel Galassini, CEMEX regional president and AGG1 Academy & Expo chair.
AGG1 Academy Delivers
Education was an integral component of the show, with attendees
purchasing more than 10,000 total
tickets for the shows' signature learning programs. AGG1 Academy offered
over 60 learning sessions, covering
topics ranging from 101-level basics
to advanced technical topics. Classes
were offered in 90 minute blocks and
in a variety of presentation styles,
from lecture-style, to panel discussions, case studies and roundtables.
