| FEATURE | Election 2016 Election Day Means More than the Oval Office by Michael W. Johnson President and CEO of NSSGA "If Congress is full of lawmakers who understand the value of efficient and stably-funded transportation infrastructure, it could be much easier to make positive impacts on our industry." THIS REALLY HAS BEEN an election cycle like no other in recent memory... or maybe ever. The bottom line is that whether you are excited about the two candidates for President of the United States of America or not, it is still vital that you and your employees vote this November for two simple reasons: Policy follows the politics, and all politics really are local. There is more to Election Day than voting for a presidential candidate. The member of Congress who represents your community, 34 Senate seats and many state and local elected offices are also on the ballot. Maybe even more than who lives in the White House are the people that hold these offices will impact how your company is affected by regulations and laws on a daily basis. You can elect candidates who understand the value of quarries and are willing to put forward bills that protect and grow our industry. You can elect candidates to local offices who appreciate the need for better infrastructure, so that our products are being used to improve our roads, highways and bridges. As the razor-thin 2000 presidential election reminds us, every vote matters. Congressional races can be decided by less than 100 votes. Think about that for a moment. Such a small margin of victory means that votes from the aggregates industry can decide who represents a congressional district. That is true influence and can help shape the congressional agenda for the next two years. Every NSSGA member needs to plan now to make sure that all of their colleagues and employees who are eligible to vote are registered to do so. It isn't only important that people vote, but also for them to have the information to decide which candidate best represents the industry's interests. We cannot afford to wait for the last minute, as we need every vote for pro-aggregates candidates that we can muster. If Congress is full of lawmakers who understand the value of efficient and stably-funded transportation infrastructure, it could be much easier to make positive impacts on our industry. That's policy following the politics. NSSGA's "Aggregates in Action" website, www.aggregatesinaction.org, has voter registration resources and a Get Out The Vote toolkit available for free. Visitors will also find information there on how to participate in NSSGA's "Driving It Home" program by hosting facility tours for members of Congress as well as candidates. There is no better way to educate current and future elected officials about issues important to the aggregates sector than to get them out to see your facility and meet the people working in our industry. The fact that these same people represent potential votes for them in the upcoming election amplifies what you and your co-workers have to say - take advantage of that to the fullest extent. Just as the collective voices of our industry helped drive Congress to enact the five-year FAST Act instead of another short-term extension of the highway program last December, you have the power to influence Congress on a whole host of issues moving forward.
