Stone, Sand & Gravel REVIEW - September/October 2016 - 14

| FEATURE | Election 2016 House Democrats: Putting People First by Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M. Chairman, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee NOVEMBER IS FAST-APPROACHING AND the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is prepared to make gains across the country thanks to aggressive candidate recruitment, a sharp focus on fundraising, early field and voter contact and new approaches that infuse data and analytics into everything the DCCC and campaigns do each day. Most important, the DCCC has been holding Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives accountable since Day One for their obstruction and misplaced priorities, coupled with their inability to truly stand up to Donald Trump.  From now until Election Day, the DCCC will continue to show voters that as their standard-bearer, Donald Trump and House Republicans are on the same team and part of the same problem. In contrast, House Democrats will demonstrate that we are prepared to fight for a stronger America in Congress, focused on securing our nation, securing our future and securing our Democracy. The DCCC has made this an intentional strategy - defining the entire toxic Republican brand and offering a positive, solution-driven alternative for voters. Voters in swing districts have viewed the 2016 election through the lens of Donald Trump from the beginning and the vast majority of them do not like what they see. As voters continue to assess the presidential race, the races down-ballot and how those choices will impact their lives, it will be clear that House Republicans and the Party of Trump will lead the American people down the wrong path. This summer we launched an aggressive national cable and digital ad campaign with a simple message: Donald Trump is a bully, a bigot, the most divisive politician in generations and the most unqualified presidential nominee in our history. Our ads draw a connection between Trump and House Republicans on a number of different levels. They make it clear that Trump is the Republican standard-bearer and that House Republicans are putting their party over the good of the country by supporting him. This campaign has continued to be a top priority. 14 STONE, SAND & GRAVEL REVIEW, September/October 2016 The DCCC has been on offense since Day One, which has allowed this aggressive national strategy to be successful. As soon as the 2014 election concluded, the DCCC started recruiting in earnest. There are outstanding candidates in a battlefield of more than 65 districts across the country, with a large and diverse class of candidates in our top-tier Red to Blue Program. Additionally, using our in-house data infrastructure, which incorporates current and historical polling and information from voter contact operations, the DCCC is arming our campaigns with the smartest data, analytics and field programs. We are building different presidential support models that draw from live data in targeted states and districts in order to better inform our contact with swing voters like independents, moderate Republicans and women. As we find these voters, our field teams and campaigns are reaching out to them with a specialized, compelling message against the Republican candidate. This happens at the door, on the phone, through campaign literature and in other communications. These are exciting strategies, but we recognize that tying House Republicans to Donald Trump on substance and policy is only half of the equation. That's why we are giving voters a reason to cheer and support Democrats and showing them that we are the positive alternative. Democrats will fight to keep people safe, create an economy that works for everyone, and end the influence of secret money in our Democracy. Ultimately, we have a strong purpose to make sure Donald Trump does not become president and that House Republicans are not able to separate themselves from Trump's destructive candidacy. And if there's one thing you can count on, it's for House Democrats to always be in the fight. That's why we jumped into action earlier and more aggressively than ever before and are continuing to employ new strategies, highlight our candidates and talk to new voters. 2016 represents a unique opportunity for a new direction in the House, and the DCCC is ready to seize that opportunity. ■
