Stone, Sand & Gravel REVIEW - September/October 2016 - 17

| FEATURE Going Above and Beyond Operations recognized for innovative environmental practices by Patrick Dunne NSSGA Director of Communications and Cherelle Wells, NSSGA Communications Coordinator BULLITT COUNTY STONE'S EXCELLENCE in environmental stewardship begins with their employees. At every level, the company stresses that sustainability is important for a quarry's operation as well as community relations. Employees of the Rogers Group Inc. operation based in Shepherdsville, Ky., continuously hone their understanding and expectations of environmental compliance related to waste management, dust control, stormwater and spill prevention among other topics. "Industry standards serve as a baseline, not a benchmark," said Jimmy James, Bullitt County Stone plant manager. "Our plant is committed to not just meeting environmental regulations, but being good neighbors and a part of our community. That means making sure we have a safe and sustainable place to work that provides good jobs and benefits for people beyond producing the aggregates that go into local homes, buildings and roads." Every day, quarries like Bullitt County Stone, of the Rogers Group, Inc., rely on innovative programs that often exceed environmental regulations in order to be good neighbors in their communities and operate safely and efficiently. South Russellville Quarry Vulcan Materials Company Russellville, Ala. received Gold Awards for Environmental Excellence during the NSSGA Annual Convention and AGG1 Academy & Expo - and Bullitt County Stone received the Platinum Award as the most remarkable operation of the group. "This award means a lot to our company and the dedicated employees at the Bullitt County Stone quarry," said Van Medlock, Rogers Group Inc. director of environmental services. Recycling is a major priority at Bullitt County Stone and other Rogers Group operations. Bullitt County Stone has partnerships with local vendors who take away old equipment batteries, waste oil, filters, belts and tires from the site when new materials are purchased. This helps businesses near each quarry and also minimizes the accumulation of unused items at operations. James said that daily discussions on procedures and operations allow staff to prevent accidents and reduce waste while improving processes that are critical to environmental measures. "Our programs are reviewed and tweaked quarterly, semi-annually and annually to incorporate changes or modifications that have developed or been discovered since the last audit," he said. "Water usage and management is critical at Bullitt County Stone and water from holding ponds and treatment basins are recycled," James said. Water from holding ponds is used to keep the production plant suppression system full and sprayed around plant entrances and haul roads to reduce dust from becoming airborne. Water at the wheel wash is treated and reused as well. "Should the water supply get low, additional water is added to the wheel wash from holding ponds. No chemicals are needed to treat the water because the water quality is great and even our STONE, SAND & GRAVEL REVIEW, www.nssga.org 17 http://www.nssga.org
